Custom Embroidered Patches

The embroidered patch is the classic format — thread stitched at high density onto a woven base fabric, creating a design that is robust, colourfast and tactile. Embroidered patches work on virtually any fabric substrate: school uniforms, sports kits, hi-vis jackets, scout sashes, blazers and bags.

The embroidery coverage can be specified per order: fully embroidered patches cover the entire badge surface with thread; partially embroidered patches use the base fabric as a design element, reducing thread count while retaining a clear, bold image.

Best for: School uniforms, sports kits, club crests, workwear, scout uniforms, military and emergency service insignia.
Embroidery coverage: 50%–100% (fully or partially embroidered to your specification).
Size range: 50mm to 150mm. Custom sizes available.

Partially Embroidered Badge Patches

Scouting Ireland groups, Cub Scout packs and Beaver Scout colonies have specific requirements for badge patches — the right shape, the right thread colours, the right size for the uniform position. We produce achievement badges, district patches, group identity badges and special event patches for scouting organisations throughout Ireland.

Scout patches are produced to Scouting Ireland's uniform standards and are available with sew-on backing as standard, consistent with the traditional scouting practice of stitching earned badges onto the uniform sash.

Best for: Scouting Ireland packs, Cub Scouts, Beaver Scouts, achievement award programmes, jamboree commemoratives.

We produce school crest patches for primary schools, secondary schools, universities and pre-schools across Ireland. Supply us with your crest artwork or a clear photograph, and our design team will prepare a full-colour embroidered proof for your approval before any production begins. Standard shapes include shield, circle, oval and custom die-cut outlines to match your crest's exact boundary.

Woven Patches

Woven patches are manufactured on a loom using fine polyester or cotton thread, producing a flatter, lighter, more detailed finish than standard embroidery. Because the design is woven rather than stitched on top of a base fabric, woven patches can reproduce fine lines, small text and complex artwork at a level of detail that embroidery cannot always match.

Woven patches are thinner and lighter than embroidered patches, making them ideal for applications where a low-profile finish is important — labels inside garments, name patches on lightweight fabrics, or designs with intricate detail at small sizes.

Best for: Garment labels, name patches, fine-detail logos, designs with small text or thin line elements, fashion and retail applications.
Available: Sew-on, iron-on and Velcro backing.

Attachment Options — Iron-On, Sew-On and Velcro

Every Abbey Badges embroidered patch is available with your choice of backing:

Sew-On (standard) A clean, uncoated backing that is sewn directly onto the garment. The most durable long-term attachment method — the patch becomes a permanent part of the fabric. Recommended for school uniforms, scout sashes, sports jerseys and any application where the patch needs to withstand regular machine washing.
Iron-On (heat-seal adhesive) A heat-activated adhesive backing is applied to the reverse of the patch. The patch is bonded to the garment using a domestic iron or heat press. Iron-on is fast and clean — ideal for retail applications, personal garments and situations where a sewing machine is not available. For best durability on items that are washed frequently, we recommend reinforcing iron-on patches with a few stitches around the edge.
Velcro (hook and loop) A hook-and-loop backing that allows the patch to be attached and removed repeatedly. Ideal for workwear that is shared between shift workers, military and emergency service kit, bags and equipment, and any application where the badge needs to be moved or updated without replacing the garment.

Patch Shapes, Borders and Sizes

Shapes

We produce patches in any shape — circle, oval, rectangle, shield, crest outline, shamrock, animal silhouettes, letter forms and fully custom die-cut outlines. If you can describe it or provide artwork, we can produce it.

Borders (Merrowed edge)

The standard finish for embroidered patches is a merrowed (overlock-stitched) border — a raised, coloured thread edge that frames the patch cleanly and prevents fraying. Border colour is specified per order. Hot-cut (laser-cut) borders are also available for custom shapes where a merrowed edge is not practical.

Embroidery coverage

- Fully embroidered — 100% thread coverage. Dense, premium feel. Best for crests and formal insignia.

- Partially embroidered — Thread covers the main design elements; the base fabric shows in background areas. Lighter and lower cost. Good for large patches where full coverage is unnecessary.

Sizes

Standard patch sizes range from 50mm to 150mm across the longest dimension. Patches outside this range are available on request.

Email sales@abbeybadges.ie or fill in the enquiry form with your patch type, quantity, size, shape and preferred backing. Attach any existing artwork, a photograph of your crest, or a sketch — whatever you have.

Approve your free design proof

Our design team prepares a full-colour digital mockup of your patch — showing embroidery coverage, border colour, shape and size. Revisions are free until you're happy to proceed.

Step 3

Production and delivery

Once you approve the design, production begins. Standard lead time is 3–4 weeks from design sign-off. Delivered by tracked courier to any address in Ireland.

1What is the minimum order quantity for custom embroidered patches?

We work with orders of all sizes. There is no minimum that will prevent us taking your order — whether you need a single replacement school crest or a bulk run of 2,000 sports club patches, contact us and we'll advise on the best approach.

2 What is the difference between embroidered and woven patches?

Embroidered patches are stitched on top of a base fabric — the thread sits proud of the surface, giving a textured, three-dimensional feel. Woven patches are made on a loom where the design is woven directly into the fabric, producing a flat, lightweight finish with finer detail capability. Embroidered patches are more durable and tactile; woven patches suit fine artwork, small text and applications where a lower-profile finish is needed.

3Can I supply my own artwork for the patch design?

Yes. Send us your artwork file (PDF, AI, EPS, or a high-resolution PNG). If you don't have a digital file — for example, if your school crest only exists in printed form — our design team can recreate it from a photograph or a scan. This design work is included at no extra charge.

4 Which backing should I choose for school uniform patches?

For school uniforms that are washed regularly, we recommend sew-on backing. Sew-on patches are the most durable long-term option and will not lift or peel after repeated machine washing. Iron-on patches are a convenient alternative for occasional use, but we recommend adding a few stitches around the edge for uniform applications.

5Can I get patches in a custom shape — not just circles or rectangles?

Yes. We produce patches in any shape — shield, shamrock, crest outline, animal silhouettes, custom die-cut outlines and more. Most school crests, club badges and insignia require custom shapes, and we accommodate all of them as standard.

6Do you supply replacement school crest patches for individual families?

Yes. If a crest has been lost or damaged, we can reproduce it from artwork on file (if we've supplied that school before) or from a photograph of the original. Contact us with details of the school and we'll advise.

7 Do you deliver to all counties in Ireland?

Yes. We deliver to all 32 counties, including Northern Ireland, by tracked courier.
